What is a hybrid event?

A hybrid event is an opportunity for you and your colleagues to experience one of our conferences without traveling or incurring food and lodging costs. Instead, at a convenient location of your choosing, in this case New Prague High School, your staff will receive expert on-site facilitation in support of keynotes and breakouts from leading PLC experts. 

We prefer to use the term hybrid event because this is not going to be like sitting at your computer or watching the conference on TV. It is a multifaceted, participatory, and guided alternative experience that captures the collaborative dynamic of the conference.



Event Overview

The PLC at Work'M process is increasingly recognized as the most powerful strategy for sustained, substantive school improvement. This event gives you and your team the knowledge and tools to implement this powerful process in your school or district. 

For those just beginning to explore PLCs, this is an excellent way to build your knowledge base. For those who are already involved in deep implementation, this event is the perfect opportunity to assess your progress and identify high­leverage next steps for implementation, introduce new team members to the process, and get answers to new questions. 

As you delve deep into the three big ideas of a PLC -- 1) focus on learning, 2) build a collaborative culture, and 3) results orientation -- you will gain specific, practical, and inspiring strategies for transforming your school or district into a place where all students learn at high levels. 


Day 1 - Monday, July 31, 2017

Registration and Breakfast - 7:15 - 8:00 a.m. - New Prague High School

Session One - 8:00 - 9:45 a.m.

Tim Brown - The Professional Learning Community Journey: Creating a School of High Expectations

This session is a call to action to energize individual and collective efforts to create schools of high expectations through the PLC process. In 1997, University of Tennessee researchers S. Paul Wright, Sandra P. Horn, and William L. Sanders reported, “As a result of analyzing the achievement scores of more than 100,000 students across hundreds of schools, the conclusion is that the most important factor affecting student learning is the teacher.” More recent studies by Dr. John Hattie have concluded that not only are teachers the key contributors to student learning, but their impact is most profound when they work together to evaluate their effect on student learning. Unsurpassed collaboration must become a priority within a school. Tim Brown discusses the three big ideas of the PLC at Work process, their connection to beliefs and practices, and what it means to commit to focus on learning, work collaboratively, and hold ourselves accountable to the mission, vision, values, and goals of our schools.

Anthony Muhammad - Bringing the Four PLC Questions to Life: Systems That Ensure All Students Learn

This session focuses on the systemic implementation of the four critical questions of a PLC. Participants gain a powerful understanding of what it takes to move from theory to practical, systemic implementation. The strategies Dr. Muhammad presents can be immediately applied when participants return to their schools.

Participants in this session:

  •  Practice developing essential standards and student outcomes.
  •  Learn the process of creating useful and valid common assessments.
  •  Discover how to methodically create an effective academic intervention system that meets students’ individual needs.

Mike Mattos - When All Means All

A PLC’s mission of ensuring that all students learn at high levels is not intended to be a wishful outcome for most students but a staff’s collective promise to every child. In this keynote, Mike Mattos discusses the essential elements of the PLC at Work process which a school or district must commit to when embracing a mission to ensure high levels of learning for all students.

This session calls on participants to:

  • Translate a mission of learning into specific actions educators must take.
  • Understand how these actions are not singular steps, but a continuous, ongoing process of school improvement.
  • Commit to the idea that every student can be academically successful.

Session Two - 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. (Secondary Participants)

Mike Mattos - Raising the Bar and Closing the Gap: Whatever It Takes in Secondary Schools

The rubber hits the road in the PLC process with the question, How do we respond when students don’t learn? A learning-focused school can’t achieve this mission without a systematic process to ensure struggling students have the additional time and support needed to succeed. What does an effective secondary school intervention process look like? This session provides participants with practical, proven secondary intervention ideas.

This session calls on participants to:

  • Learn how to systematically identify students who need extra help.
  • Create time in the master schedule for supplemental and intensive interventions.
  • Best utilize staff and resources to target interventions and extension.

Session Two - 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. (Elementary Participants)

Rebecca DuFour - Raising the Bar and Closing the Gap: Whatever It Takes in Elementary Schools

Schools that function as PLCs must ultimately do two things: 1) build a collaborative culture to promote continuous adult learning, and 2) create structures and systems that provide students with additional time and support for learning.

Participants in this session examine strategies to collectively:

  • Respond to the learning needs of each student in a timely, directive, and systematic way.
  • Create and sustain strong parent partnerships to enhance student learning.
  • Make celebrations part of the school culture.

After examining different models of systematic intervention and enrichment, participants receive criteria to assess their own schools’ responses and an action-planning template for next steps in raising the bar and closing the gap.

Lunch - 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Working Lunch Session - Leadership in a PLC for Elementary Administrators and Central Office Staff.

Session Three - 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.

Richard DuFour - In Praise of American Educators and How they Can Become Even Better

This keynote is based on the following assertions:

The current generation of American educators is achieving the best results in history.

The consequences for students who do not succeed in the American educational system have never been more direct.

Our profession has within its sphere of influence the ability to create conditions that can lead to dramatic improvement in student and adult learning.

We must accept responsibility for the fact that these conditions are not yet the norm in American schools.

Richard DuFour provides explicit information regarding the conditions we must create and presents a candid assessment of how many schools are skirting their responsibility to do what must be done.

Session Four - 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Team Time - At this time, your building and or grade level/department will be provided time to work together.

 Mike Mattos
Professional Learning Communities at Work


Mike Mattos is an internationally recognized author, presenter, and practitioner who specializes in uniting teachers, administrators, and support staff to transform schools by implementing response to intervention and professional learning communities. Mike is one of the primary architects of the Professional Learning Communities at Work™ process and co-created the RTI at Work™ model, which builds on the foundation of PLCs at Work™ by using team structures and a focus on learning, collaboration, and results to drive successful outcomes.

He is former principal of Marjorie Veeh Elementary School and Pioneer Middle School in California. At both schools, Mike helped create powerful PLCs, improving learning for all students. In 2004, Marjorie Veeh, an elementary school with a large population of youth at risk, won the California Distinguished School and National Title I Achieving School awards.

A National Blue Ribbon School, Pioneer is among only 13 schools in the United States selected by the GE Foundation as a Best-Practice Partner, and is one of eight schools chosen by Richard DuFour to be featured in the video series The Power of Professional Learning Communities at Work™: Bringing the Big Ideas to Life. Based on standardized test scores, Pioneer ranks among the top one percent of California secondary schools and, in 2009 and 2011, was named Orange County’s top middle school. For his leadership, Mike was named the Orange County Middle School Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators.


 Tim Brown
Professional Learning Communities at Work


Tim Brown, a consultant, has 28 years of experience in education. As principal of elementary, middle, and high schools in Missouri, he led each to become a successful professional learning community. These PLCs feature highly collaborative environments where clear goals, formative assessment, data analysis, differentiated instruction, interventions, and enrichment have resulted in increased student achievement.

Tim’s schools consistently excelled under his leadership. Pleasant View Middle School was recognized as a Missouri Gold Star School. Campbell Elementary School, a high-poverty elementary school where 87 percent of students qualified for free or reduced lunches, was recognized as one of Missouri’s Most Improved Schools and an Exemplary Practices School. In 2005, Tim was honored by his peers as Missouri’s Distinguished Elementary Principal.


 Paul Farmer
Professional Learning Communities at Work

Paul Farmer is an experienced practitioner who has worked at the classroom, building, and central office levels. As principal of Joyce Kilmer Middle School, Paul was one of the first principals in Fairfax County, Virginia, to build a PLC. He now consults with educators at every level, from classroom teachers to systemwide leaders, helping them develop and sustain PLCs. His presentations include hands-on activities and practical applications that demonstrate how to build a collaborative culture and a learning-centered environment. Paul inspires participants by highlighting success stories and lessons learned on his own PLC journeys.

Although Paul began his educational career in the classroom, he was soon promoted to a team leader, guiding efforts to support underachieving students. That position led him to become a department chair, central office teacher specialist, curriculum writer, and staff developer. He later accepted a position as assistant principal of a 3,000-student high school in Maryland’s Montgomery County Public School System. In 2005, the deputy superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools selected Paul to be the project director of instructional technology integration. In that capacity, Paul worked with all grade levels and directed a districtwide project to build an online curriculum repository with links to assessments designed to improve student performance on Virginia's high-stakes tests.

Paul is the co-author of How to Help Your School Thrive Without Breaking the Bank and Dealing With the Tough Stuff: Practical Solutions for School Administrators.

Paul earned a master's degree in education leadership from George Mason University.
